Skunk Hunters

I’m sorry to say this, but most of the people I’ve seen that have taken the course look like the typical stoner poser.
I heard Ricky Williams on a podcast and he mentioned the program. Period. He was starting up a new company or something and he barely mentioned that he attended. He is VERY smart and likely saw the crookedness of it as well. I learned some stuff watching some of the early podcasts before Gillman got rich and fat.

I got about 130 germinated skunks from the 1993 line.. looks like 20 plants from the old stock then some from different batches of previous open pollination.

They're going outdoors for a bean making session/recombining 😉
Glad to see you and others going back (20-30 years) into their old seed stock to see what you can find.
I'm trying to crack open a few close to 20 year old beans of Chemdog, Somango, and Sensi Skunk.
I just made up a sprouting concoction with inoculants, bacteria, and Pinto Beans
I mixed and mooshed it around for 3 days at room temps.
I ended up with a fermenting,
Pinto Bean "Sproutin' Sauce". lol
Will it work?
Who the hell knows, but growers used to try anything in the early days of the 70's and 80's.
Now any problem in the garden gets a dose of Cal/Mag. lol
We were pioneers and didn't have the internet to answer a question or problem.
If the net went down today, 90% of growers would be lost.
Overwatering would "skyrocket"!!! lol
Weed world would turn into an episode of Breaking Bad.
I wake up, I water,
that's all I know.
I wake up, I water,
That's all I know.
lol

Good luck, hope you find some of those old "Sulphur burners".

The beauty of old seeds is that even though finding skunk is what motivates the grow (in my case at least), truth is we should not disregard non skunk expressions either. These old seeds can be incredible breeding material regardless.

Oh I tried many methods to help old seeds germinate.. so far laying them on a worm casting bed and a rhizotonic seed soak were the most successful methods. Higher temperature and keeping the towel or dirt on the dryer side did the most good.

I'm of the younger generation myself and I have to admit that without internet a large portion of the youth would be lost hah.

Books? The pinterest decor thing? No wayyy 😂

Old seed stock is becoming more valuable by the day. Now there is evidence that HLVD is passed through seeds and even male pollen. Tests on most of the elite clones are coming back positive for HLVD/Fusarium or both. This could be the reason for the lack of smell and taste. The suspicion is they were cross contaminated in a large facility possibly DH nursery... where it was "discovered". Its just a rumor but scientist are working to find other pathogens that might be at work. When I drive down the street I see the watered down gene pool of humanity, cell phones and big pharma run our country. Maybe the some of same things have changed cannabis too. All I know is it used to be real easy to plant a seed and watch it grow. Keep those seeds away from the new stuff!

Yes they are, that is, if you can find actual old stock and not be lied to about it's origins.
But how can you tell if it's from old stock or someone's hermi'd closet seed? You can't!
Comes down to a "trust" issue.
People need to quit whining about it and deal with it.
Way too many "inexperienced" chuckers calling themselves "breeders" spreading disease and hermaphodite tendencies. I've never experienced so many herms as I have the past couple years. I'm ready to throw in the towel, cause it sucks having to check every bud site for pollen sacks. It has taken the fun out of growing weed.
Growers are just too damn lazy and don't wanna take the time to sort through the older seeds hoping to find something special.
I go through a lot of wasted space on the hunt for a keeper, but still better than growing self-fucked seed.
If we could only turn the clock back 20 years and start again.
Everything I see today that is suppose to be old, I have to question.

What smells like a skunk, Dad?

Totally agree on all of it.

FWIW bros grimm says they test for hlvd in their breeding stock. I know he did a lot of work stabilizing C99. So, maybe that lends truth to their claim of testing? i.e. protecting what you've created/feeling of responsibility

Hopefully more breeders start taking precautions Both in the cannabis world and the others you pointed out.

I don't know if anyone realizes just how serious the HLV has become in recent years.
And you wonder why I don't deal with seeds and/or clones anymore from the weed world.
I feel sorry for you hydro guys, you can ruin your whole crop in a couple hrs.

I just ditched my whole mom room idea. I'm not breeding so there's no transfer of anything but I had a plant that looked bad in the tent - and I only grow from seed and take my own clones.

I have a ton of seed so it's easier to just keep dropping them and cull any HLV suspects like I would a male (just because they'll produce shit weed). There will always be plants you want to clone and make more flower of but all in house cuts should be fine if the seed-stock is cool.

There's a thing about a 20min seed soak in a 20% bleach solution. If it's in the embryo I don't see how that helps but there are things people are trying.

Did you watch the video I posted?
You should watch it so you can get the whole scoop on how bad this is.
Seeds carry it inside and in the coating.
The cannabis plant is being crucified right before our eyes.
Like characters of the "Black Death". lol

Thing is - and what they don't seem to address - is the fact that it is mostly latent. We only see it when it presents. The bleach soak is supposed to permeate the shell just like water would - no clue if it'll help but that would be a last resort for me - but like I said - if I have to cull a plant for it and drop another bean it is what it is. Shouting at the sky ain't gonna fix it. Why aren't they loking at things to keep it in latency (dormant) if they can't kill it?

I am growing smoke - it will not affect my flowers unless it is actively presenting in my one specific seed plant. I won't be passing it on, breeding with it, etc. You could have a pack of beans that all have the plant HIV but only one presents and will actually have it affect the grow and the flower - even though they all carry the roid. In my book that's just like culling a male - it's more about learning to identify it early without testing that a home grower cannot get done and probably wouldn't pay for anyway.

As far as that specific video- no, unless it was on FCP yesterday when they had a whole hoard of PhD's discussing all aspects of the thing.

Yea, most people could care less as long as they have smoke.
It's not being addressed by common growers except the ones who have it or heard of it. So it keeps spreading and mutating.
Basically, the plant ain't itself anymore.
All this shit ain't normal.
It's only become an issue recently.
How did this happen in the first place?
