Which wouldn't be quite so heinous if they used that money to build schools, fix roads, upgrade infrastructure like electric/water/sewage, stuff like that - instead of using it to buy votes by offering "free" stuff to people that contribute nothing to society but their bought an paid for vote.

Agreed - but I think everyone will agree that "open rebellion" in this instance simply means going to jail for doing something illegal - unless you have the $$ to take it to the high courts.
If ”everyone” did it openly, i.e. an open rebellion, “they” could not afford to arrest, detain, process, house and feed them all.
I guess the difference is, I don't need the gubmint to approve or disapprove of my activities. I do what I do and we don't interact with each other - I'd like to keep it that way regardless of legality - Why raise my hand?
