Yeah the thermostat was cheap. I use a blank root riot and wet it and stick the probe in the center. Keeps my root zones around 82 with no bullshit

one cheap solution for not buying the thing to turn down the heat on a heating pad, is just laying a towel across the mat, then put the tray on that! you can dbl up if it's still too hot! I'm also a poor fucker, I ain't spending 40 bucks to control the heat mat, just laying a towel down, it reduces the heat and works great! and best part it's free!

I hear that.... we are both in the same boat being poor. I think I'll try your towel method. The cable box has hot and cold spots on it, also used the ballast on my hps light

that's smart, i'm gonna use that. i always just put the probe leaning on the bottom of the tray, but it's the root zone temp you're going for, so that way makes sense.

I haven't used mine yet, everyone I spoke to said that they get too hot. Do they really get that hot? Also where do you get the thermostat from?

Place a towel over the mat a a buffer.Use an IR or tongue thermometer to measure the temp differentials,towel -no towel.Towel for the win with no thermostat heat control.

Using a towel on top of the mat makes the heat more even too. A lot of the time there is hotspots and cold spots on them

I haven't used mine yet, everyone I spoke to said that they get too hot. Do they really get that hot? Also where do you get the thermostat from?

mine did, and where I got the mat, they suggested to me, lol, to get the thermostat, as its almost twice the cost of the mat, but I didn't and burnt a mess o beans in a cold closet, with the handtowel buffer both under and above the mat, I knew about a half day too long with the amt of moisture in the dome. I bought the mat to quit using granny's heating pad that never shuts off, but doesn't cover the area of the dome. The mat does and she heats up just fine. I actually had to run a timer with like a half hr on and hr and half off, to get it not to burn the whole tray, I got a mess o beans to crack, but once in the dome, too hot. Someone said to set the temp to 73, I'll have to look around about it to see the perfect temp.

Temp on the mat is 87.
Temp of water in the shot glass with seeds 80.
Got a 12 ct. Jiffy Dome with pellets sitting on it, with a meat thermometer in the pellet(genius Heisen) reading at 82.

All you guys talking bout it made me check all my temps, and report back, lol.

A heat pad thermostat is 35$ on Amazon.....I’m a super cheap guy. I bought it because if it keeps me from screwing up even one pack of seeds it’s paid for itself. Seeds pop easier. It keeps seedlings happy. Cloning is way easier with it too. Plus you save a tiny bit of electricity because the pad isn’t on all the time. Most growing stuff (including nutrients) isn’t necessary, is overpriced, adds complication and has little benefit. A thermostat isn’t one of them (for me at least)
