I'm not trying to be a smart ass but I've read you want at least 30 gallons of living soil per plant. I'm a hydro guy to I've never attempted organic growing
From what I understand it’s recommended to use larger pots so the plants don’t deplete the soil of nutrients at a faster rate then the microbial life can make more available to the plants. I’ve heard no smaller than 30 gallons, and no smaller than 15 gallons, but I’ve never really had any issues in 10 or even 7 gallons and I run on the longer side with my veg cycles.

And there it is - predominantly I veg 4 weeks then flip. Fems go right to a 5g or 7g and for regs they don't get their pot until sexed so that knocks off a few weeks more of the soil being "used" Which means they can be good in a 5g if you know it's not a 12-weeker. If my plants are not rootbound (in one gallons) after I get the regs sexed they go to the 5'g. If they look "rooty" I'll shove them in a 7g. But pretty much anything going to flower from being "not to big" for a one gallon will not "eat" all of a 5g pot of good soil. I did a pair of 14wk Nigerian Ducksfoot in 7g pots and they finished faded but healthy faded. Nice fall colors.

It's all about what you grow for - and I grow for headstash.

I use homemade lacto bacillus, ferments from both ripe and green fruit and from ganja and comfrey, I'll add a little eggshell/vinegar calcium but never more than 4ml/gl of any of them. It is more to buffer the water and make the soil life happy than to feed the plant. That's whgat people don't get is that the food is already there, you just need to keep it watered, and those little treats supercharge everything.

If I really want to perk them up - usually right after flip - I'll add about a cup of worm castings to a 5g bucket and stir that occasionally for an hour or so. Or I'll sprout 2tbsp of barley or corn for a few days and blend that up as a sprouted seed tea. Or both. An alfalfa SST is great in veg. So there's always something to add to make us feel needed :)

I reamend with stuff from build-a-soil like their craft blend, or base minerals from down-to-earth, as well as my own vermi-compost from my "grass-fed" worms ;) The key is not a lot of anything, but a little of everything.

That's what I've come to understand, the ''battery'' analogy. I think the secret sauce in smaller pots comes from plastic pots or the fabric pots with liner. Keeping the lower portion of the root zone from drying out too fast. But I have nothing to back that opinion up with just observation running fabric pots outside.

There's definitely not a recommended "dry-back" or you just kill biology so it'a a moister grow overall. That's where the good mulch layer and a covercrop act as an environmental buffer zone from the tent the same way the l/s pots do for the sides. Bare soil in an all fabric pot will dry from all sides and actually effect the growroom humidity. The living soil pots allow the lower few inches of pot to breathe better than 4 little square holes in the plastic pots, but both work.

There's also a lot of trust in the system that all the little biology will do it's symbiotic thingy with the plants - but weeds want to grow. Shit is happening that you can't see and it's letting the plants get what they need. But it ain't some cannabis voodoo - it's just transferring a piece of outdoor science indoorsthat has been going on for millions of years - without the caterpillars and such ;)

I haven't planted one yet that couldn't figure out that I wasn't gonna plug in an IV for it.

Ha ha, excuse meposting after a big smoke and half bottle of single malt.
On a better note, my Platty Ices are popping nicely.
Decided to relocate to the T5 new bulbs, in the cutting tent. Keep my eyes on the Ice.
Will flip others from 24 in 1.2 metre squared tent. Not sure why this girl is flowering like this before the flip. Most pre flowering have seen. Others are OK. Thoughts anyone?

And if you get what you need out of your grow, more power to ya. Life ain't a contest when it's over no one won.

But when you start digging at how other people do things expect some backlash.
The emperor wears no clothes. Love a bit of Jack.
All about what you like. Still mastering this GG4.
Love the info on this group.
Am humbled in the company.

My goal in life is to be liked by random internet people I'll never meet LOL

I always play in the contests because the more people there are the more fun it is. But the attempt to improve the pic-o-the-month thing is still all about likes.

I am in the contest to run tester beans for Heisen as a thank you for him letting me keep a grow journal for free, and having it where you can just block certain people instead of arguing with them. The contests are usually where I remember why I blocked people  Not looking to patent anything, sell anything, buy anything, or win anything.

I am doing a whole thing on making living soil work in small pots. For me. Period. But since one person showed an interest I don't mind explaining what I'm doing. Just growing my smoke and looking for the easiest. cheapest way.
that is what i can really relate to @ H.A.F.!

It's funny how you take an observation as a dig...calm down boomer.

Thing is, they aren't actually yellow - it's the lighting and the camera. Obfuscate all you want. you're two posts that set me off were in tandem. about hating soil but doing it to give us a chance, and shortly thereafter or just before, the "innocent" question in the pic only thread about my plants being yellow. Yes - you innitiated a question and response thing that set the whole thread askew, and I think it was intentional. Whatever, no skin of my ass. But don't talk shit to me or about me and expect me to be Mr Nice.

Maybe I would understand better if you could explain why a guy that grown in a "lab" with inert media and chemicals suddenly wants to do soil for a contest? Why would anyone enter a contest and not use a system they know? That's just odd. Like I said - a future excuse brewing. "Well, I don't usually do soil... you guys are lucky I didn't do my real grow" :sneaky:

Me personally am using coco
Dialing in the environment for GG4. Get that right mi Platt Ice next.
Quality lingers with genetics and a grower that observes his shit.
Plagron now used to Canna.
Did voodoo juice years ago, loved it for smell. We didn't call it terps. My grobro let a NL#5 go 10. Suffice to say it minged.
Poot 600W HPS
Proprietary mix and feed.
