I think that is usually caused by people waiting for the tap root to show before planting and then planting them taproot down. The seed is supposed to be planted on its side, or with the taproot facing up, which causes the seed to roll as it pushes up through the soil. Almost every time I’ve had issues with the shell not coming off it’s been when I’ve planted the seeds into plugs with the taproot straight down.
@Fiddler's Green , seems to have a cure for that

LOL..."schoolin'". I've always planted tap root down. OOOPs! FWIW....some shed the helmet...some don't. IMO, it's seed specific.

Beyond that...I never gave it much thought. Fuckers either grow...or they don't. :ROFLMAO:
Yeah, if you look at how they grow when you just toss a seed in soil the taproot grows up at first, then it does a 180 and drives itself into the soil. This isn't specific with cannabis seeds, either, most seeds grow this way.
