I’ve run Tropf Blumats for quite awhile.. I’m going to add to this older thread so future researchers can find all the info in one place.
It is important to get the “Tropf” as just “Blumats” is a different thing altogether, I don’t believe I saw this within the thread.
I run a small elevated res fed by a large res via a cycle timer. The small res has an overflow similar to a flood and drain set up to keep the elevated res water level consistent, which keeps water pressure consistent... CONSISTENT PRESSURE IS KEY, I can not stress this enough.
My feeder res is supplied by a bulk res utilizing a float valve and a throttle bucket. Quick explanation, a small tall container(plastic cereal box) in which the float is installed with a small hole low on one side... probably no longer need because my newest elevated res drains excess water level very quick, but with a slow draining elevated res would allow the feeder res level to possibly overflow.
I use jacks hydro/calnit and generic Epsom salts in 3-2-1,it is critical that “NUTES FULLY DISSOLVE” The drip lines on the Tropf Blumats is very small and clean nutes help prevent clogs. I used to use Dutchmaster’s Zone and House and Garden drup clean.
I use 100% Canna Coco, you can add things like perlite for aeration but where you place the Tropf Blumat MUST HAVE SOLID CONTACT WITH THE MEDIUM. If you use perlite you need to keep it from contacting the carrot.
I’ll include more pictures later, right now the wife needs my help. Below is a picture of how I combat the occasional “run away” aka a Blumat that overruns it’s pot. It’s a dollar store plant tray filled with NAPA 8822 granular diatomaceous earth set inside an 18 quart dishpan. The roots grow down into the DE and the whole think kinda acts like a Hempy Bucket if the lower tray remains
