Grow room ran by generator

I recently put solar panels on the house. Well when they calculated my wattage needs they did if off the the energy needs of 2 1k hps and 1- 8" and 2 6" inline fans. Well whilst they were installing them, covid happened. So when my first deposit of Trump Bucks came in, i invested in my ChilLed x5s. Then I talked the wife into letting me get out from under the old school inlines and get a couple of AC infinity with Controller 67s. Now its middle of winter, I got both lights running full power, and my electric bill is $16.78. My solar panel bill is 165 bucks. My average bill before all this was between 280-400 depending on time of year.
I've been kicking around a natural gas generator for a co-generation situation; power for the grow, heat for the house, hot water, CO2 for the grow.

The ideas keep following; has anyone heard of a Peltier cooler? It's a system that takes energy from a heat source and creates cooling. Generator exhaust has plenty of heat, if such a unit could be built on a compact frame, it could handle my cooling needs...

Anyone interested in digging into this with me?
Thermal electric wine fridges are great for storing product. No compressor. So they dont rob your humidity. For energy efficiency, peltier still require an electrical charge, fans, ect to work. I saw a peltier cpu cooler that was then ran through a ss wortz chiller coil as a hydroponic water cooler. From what I remember, once they got everything well insulated, with good reflective material it actually worked. I think the issue was that for what they spent building it, insulated everything it would have been cheaper to just buy a chiller.

Im actually planning on a small mushroom tent in my grow room. Mushrooms are cheap to grow, cheap to set up. I dont run a sealed grow but I am also finding im not fighting heat. My idea is that once the mushroom are pinning I can start blooming and the co2 from the tent will give me a nice boost. Maybe it wont and ill just come out with some wonderful homegrown mushrooms. Cant lose.
 
Oi... Say H, didn't you just build your pimp new grow facility in FL? If you did(I hope I'm remembering that correctly) you might want to seriously look into throwing some solar panels on it as man does your state have some sweet incentives!@ o_O

Hours on them machines are good for maybe 4000 before major issues. Using generator full time for growing is cra cra. You would prob get about 6 months of full time use before rebuilds.
There are backup power rated generators and primary power rated units, which s you might expect both last much longer and cost much more.

The 30kW unit I'm looking at is built around a 3.0 litre GM V6. The little units in the doghouse are two cylinder units. Not the same at all.

Properly installed and plumbed, I expect my natural gas unit to provide;
1. Electricity, I'm looking at maybe 20kW continuous most of the time.
2. Heat, both hot water via the water cooling circuit and via exhaust.
3. CO2 because I'm running natural gas and as such it's safe as long as the mirror gets adequate oxygen.
4. Smell reduction because I'll be pulling air in through a manifold that draws from the growing space which will otherwise be sealed. Negative pressure will keep smell from escaping and then it gets burned in the motor and voila! Gone.

I've seen some purpose built co-generation systems that even include an AC compressor inline on a clutch. That would be sexy but I don't know if they have them in the size range in looking for; most home sized units are only a tenth of the output I want.

DAYUM ttystikk, that's a deep dive! Sounds pretty damn brilliant though and you would really be squeezing every possible thing you can out of your generator for maximum efficiency. You by chance aren't related to Michael Strizki are you? :LOL:

I'll have an exhaust that's several hundred degrees from a motor pulling a decent load so I'll have a lot of heat. I'm looking to get at least 3 Tons of process chilling and while it might be expensive to build, the name of the game is saving power. That always pays for itself; the question is how long it takes to do it.

So that's optimism for ya lol I'm still kicking it around.
More power makes it work better at pulling heat from one side to the other, but your going to have losses. not only in the electric needed to run the peltier but also the cooling of the hot side of the peltier. Would have to decide what you do with the heat from the cooling.

I expect to have the entire Peltier cooler outside so it can shed heat there. The exhaust will go outside, thru the unit and done.

I'll have a shunt for the portion of the exhaust I plan to use for CO2 supplementation that will go through a cooling step or two; air to water heat exchange with engine coolant, so 160F, and if needed it can also pass through the water I'm using in the lights. Once the air is cool enough it will just dump straight into the room through a pipe with a valve on a CO2 controller.

That could work. Another option for the cold side of the peltier is attached to the water tank. Pulling the heat out of a large volume of water should be more efficiant then trying to cool running water through it. Submerge a hallow metal coil in that same tank and the air can move through the coil in the cold water cooling it to dump in the space and the cold water for water cooling the lights. Could be a good system depending on how much power it takes for the peltier to maintain the tank cold water. May even be worth burying the tank and letting geo cooling help with that. A little light math in termal dynamics and should be able to figure out if it was theoretically work.

i will have to fallow along ,new stuff to me,are like new tools will it hold up or will i twist the end off a3/8 extension at half my normal torque specs.[ i really dislike cheap tools!]and busted knuckels!

Oh, I aspire to such a setup; I've even got home remodeling plans I'm starting on so as to maximize my south facing roof exposure. If I play my eaves and angles right, I'll get over 2000ft² of solar panels.

I'd love to have electric cars and storage batteries to store all that juice, and then convert all that sunshine into sweet sweet cannabis...

In a long ago and far away place, I MAY know somebody that did that. ;)

You need to buy the heavy duty outdoor type cords. It can be done, and if you put the cords in pvc pipe they can even be buried or covered in leaves etc. to avoid detection, helps to prevent the cord and connections getting wet or weathered etc. . Pvc pipe takes camo paint too.

A generator makes sense as a power outage backup, maybe not so much as the frontline thing.
That is called..."raceway in a raceway" and is against the NEC code.

The biggest issue with solar is the cost of the batteries required for a grow...honestly when I looked into it it would have been 30 grand for what I need a 30kwh solar array is roughly 10k plus another 20k in batteries. But it would be sweet to not have electric bill anymore.
