Advice on germination and strains

Seed of Memory

Hey guys, i could use a bit of your expertise. So if you have stumbled across my posts you know I've been gathering the proper tools to do a small grow in my home. At current i have space for 2 plants. I ordered some seeds from Seedsman about a month ago and the tracking says i should receive them by Friday. I spent good money on them and i don't want to screw up my germination and throw my money away. My husband has been out of work for a couple of years and I've spent every spare penny I have acquiring the proper tools i should have had before i ever got started. So I'm pretty broke now and need to make sure I'm taking advantage of all the info I can. Anyway, i finally have most of it. Which bring me to the needed advice.

I only ordered 8 seeds. I'm only attempting to pop 2 at a time in the event I'm super successful and end up with too many plants that i won't have room for. I also ordered rapid rooters. The soil I ordered, fox farm ocean forest, is apparently a hot soil and i don't have the cash right now to get an acceptable mix in soil to keep my seedlings from burning. So the rapid rooters were kind of my fail safe to keep the baby roots safe until they can handle the nutes.

The last time I germinated I used the paper towel method. I have never used rapid rooters. I have a container that should be tall enough for them while also being covered and holding humidity. I have the closet I was using before I got my tent and a cheap 45w (probably only puts off 10) led lamp marketed for seedlings and clones. I was thinking to soak the rapid rooters in water for a couple of minutes, put the seeds in, then put them in the container (picture of all the previously listed below), and put them in the dark, 74-75°F closet, and leave them. Is that a somewhat sound plan? And should i use the light or just keep them in the dark? The light is the red, blue, and white types you see on Amazon.

The second part of my advice search is on which seeds to pop. So I ordered Kryptonite, Skunk XL, and White OG Diesel. They are sending White Widow freebies. Considering my experience level, 2 plant limit, and 36×24×60 tent with 1 Viparspectra 300W reflector LED, which 2 do you all think would be the best to start with?

Are the White Widow beans fems? Your gonna need to take measures to make your plants work with what you have. The space for your light and the height of your pots, plus the distance that you need to keep between light and plants is gonna cut the room you have to grow to about 2 to 2 1/2 feet. So be prepared to top (several times) or maybe manifold your plants. I would also suggest that you go into 12/12 as soon as possible or even from the start.

Germinate in the dark. The less you handle the seeds the less chance of damp off from infection. Soak the rapid rooters then put the seeds in. Put in the dark and check them every 24 hours. When they pop and are up about 1" put them under light.

I'd start with the White Widow freebies.
Best of luck

I agree. I'd go with 12/12 from seed. I'd also make sure I cloned. You can alway fracture their stems if they get to tall (god knows I've done that more than once).

They are supposed to be fems. It let me select what type i wanted and i went with feminised. The more I'm reading though i probably should have went with autos. Thanks for the advice. I'll start with the WW. Have you ever used the rooters?

I had read in one thread to put a couple of drops of peroxide in the soak water to prevent infection. Is that a good idea? Also, should I soak in tap or distilled? I'll start with the WW. Eventually I'm going to set up another tent. The more i read in to it I want to attempt to go perpetual. However, i first need to harvest. Gotta walk before you can fly right?

No don't use H2O2 it's to caustic. Just use tap water. If you're in the US it uses chlorine or chloramine as a disinfectant unless you are one your own well. Both will be fine for germination but it depends on your well analysis if you're on well. If you're not in the US then it depends on the country what your tap water has. So that might become an issue.

I did perpetual for a few years and finally grew to hate chopping every 2 weeks I stopped LOL. I hate trimming.

Good luck with your grow.

Thanks for the input. I am in the US and I am on city water. Would you recommend letting the water sit for a couple of days to dechlorinate it or are you saying that would be good for the soak?

And since my husband isn't working I have an in-house trimmer. Lol. He won't mind. Especially if it is pretty and frosty.

Sorry for the blurry pic.
Your gonna want to maybe shoot for something like this. It’s a Cinderella 99, less than 3ft, grown 12/12 from seed, under a light very similar to the one you have.
It is beautiful. Clearly I will need to be more careful in the future about my strain genetics. So I can safely put them in to 12/12 from seed? I didn't know that.

Yes you can start 12/12 from the day your beans sprout. A few strains won’t respond well to it, but most do in my experience. I let the plant pictured above grow to 5 or 6 nodes and then I cut off everything except the bottom 2 nodes, leaving 4 branches. If you’ll let them grow out bigger and then top them, they have a bigger and better root system and recover faster.

Okay. I was concerned pushing them straight into flower would make them like 6 inches tall. Lol.

Sorry but this info on H2O2 is simply untrue. I know old growers that germinate all seeds in soak of 50/50 mix of warm water and diluted H2O2. Remember that H2O2 is unstable when it is exposed to light. It liberates O2 and H2O as byproducts of its breakdown.

HOWEVER, it is just fine to use a 5%-10% bleach solution as a rinse. Shake seeds in bleach water for 5-10 minutes, rinse with water, then soak for germination. It is called "surface sterilization"

What about soaking the rapid rooters? Have you ever used those? And thank you.

I have used Rapid Rooters before and I fucking hate them. H-A-T-E and I very, very rarely use that word. I hesitate to even use it here.

Here's a simple seeding mix from Gas at Swami Organic Seeds.

1/3 high quality worm castings
1/3 perlite or pumice
1/3 peat moss

No food in mix until transplant into next up pot. Seedlings don't need a high octane mix to start life.
Some time around the 5th node transplant into next up pot that is a mature LOS.

Using this seedling mix I have a higher sprout success rate. It's not inhabited by soil critters yet so less chance of sprouts getting consumed by soil critters before the seedling gets at the light

If you are in hydro then use something inert like rockwool

I'm in soil so I will try it out. I'm still on my first grow and this will be my actual attempt. I'm growing with bagseed right now. I just ordered fox farm ocean forest soil.

And Swami as in the california breeder?
