Fluffy vs. Compacted Buds

Ive noticed that homegrown, freshly dried, and even cured buds, have a different look than street or commercial weed.

I had some buds of mine in a bag in my pocket, and they got all squished down and compacted, and looked legit like the weed everyone knows and loves.

So the question is, do you pack your buds down or leave them fluffy?

The following pics are a GG4 Bud, before and after a squish

This shit is dense as fuck, by the way!

not as a dramatic of a change as I’ve notice with a couple other strains.

Interesting thought regarding the protection of trichs.

Let’s debate it.
Does compacting the buds provide more protection to the inner trichs while sacrificing the trichs on the outer surface? Or maybe compacting the buds fucks up all the trichs?

My initial thought is that compacting the buds could help preserve all the inner trichs by shielding them from oxygen and light.

Here are my thoughts on the subject.
Depends on what you're gonna do with the flower.
If you are going for concentrates, leave the bud presteen as possible. That keeps the trichome heads intact and on the flower and open makes easy to separate heads from plant.
Now, for smoking, I would want to remove all the sugar leaves before compressing. I wouldn't compress too much. It's important to protect the head from bursting. if you smell it, you're losing flavor. The terps and other molecules "gas" off when compressed or disturbed.
When temps get above 68 or 78 degrees. I can't remember at the moment. They gas off. Like smelling Honeysuckle when the sun pops up in the morning.
And final,
Cure the best way possible. After you harvest is when the real journey of the flower begins. Many grow a fantastic crop and turn around and fuck the curing process up.
The "moral" of the story is,
protect the trichs at all costs.
Period.

After they've done their initial hang dry, I like to give em a gentle squeeze (gentle). My thought is it slows the further drying/curing process down. Was always told slower was better for curing, but I suppose that's very subjective.
I will cut and put the flowers in the frig for a day or 2 at times. "quick preservation of trichs".
Then, I will place mine in room with about 50 degrees temps with a fan circulating and "not blowing" directly on them. It might not be exactly perfect conditions, but it's about preserving. You can't smell it as bad when it's this cold either.
Your RH is gonna dictate how long you dry them before you begin the cure.
Yes, the longer cure is better. 2 weeks is good enough, but a month reveals the true aromas of the weed.
Note)
Try to handle your flower only before it begins to wilt. They will bruise like a banana. So have your work done as soon as possible.
Sorry OP, Got carried away. lol

Does it bother anybody else when you show somebody a really nice plant, and the first thing they do is squeeze the main cola in their fist, every time?
Every time I show my brother mine he’ll start the squeezing shit. I’m like ‘motherfucker, get your monkey paws off my shit, and he always gets pissed and says ‘Ahh it ain’t gonna hurt it’.
Bullshit, I say. It doesn’t make for a very photogenic plant. But would he know about that? He can’t grow anything worth taking a pic of, lol.

I think just genetics plays a key role. Some are always fluffy, but I've got a couple plants that the buds are always compact as hell, even after just sitting in jars. Just like the commercial weed I used to get. I always thought commercial weed was just compressed down but apparently it could also be the genetics.

I remember my 1st grow. it was 1 plant under an Oak in the middle of the woods. of course it came up and died. I put the poor thing in my wallet and later, "Mom" found it and my 'addiction" was out. lol That was in 1974, i was 13. lol
I am doing a little better now. Just keep it simple and you will progress as you gain experience. That plant will talk to you, and control you like a Zombie. Just ask any of these "seed collectors" lol

Agreed . I also think that the curing process will not be the same once u compact it. Stuff needs to burn off too while curing
