Stainless Steel

I used to be in steel...for 35 years.

Stainless Steel comes in two common grades...and they are not different strengths like normal fasteners.

A2..or 18-8 stainless is the one with the lesser corrosion resistance and contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel This is stainless steel but it can rust and if they are really stingy with the nickel a magnet will stick to it.

A4 or 316 stainless contains 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum . It is very resistant to corrosion and is generally used in more extreme applications like salt water docks and acidic environments.

For any indoor use a2 will be fine.

The chromium percentage is what gives the desigation...18-8 is 18% Chromium and 3-16 is 16% chromium.

And chromium if in a hexavalant state is carcinogenic....like Erin Brokavich. Every bolt that has a plated finish that was made 10 years ago or older had hexavalant chrome but that is now a trivalant chromium which is not carcinogenic.

I'm a serious knife collector and it blows my mind the types of steel they are making now . And shit keeps getting better and better . Lc200n is prob the most rust resistant I have. They put it in salt lake for a month ,not a spot of rust
