I've never heard that before.
Just my own personal experience, I can’t say I’ve had a black seed sprout, like really black/jet black or even some with color that turn glossy black when they get wet, I’ve just never had any like those sprout and when I cracked them open, if the seed was dry the embryo would be dry/hard/brittle and crumble between my fingers with a little pressure, but if I soaked them a while they would turn glossy jet black and when I cracked them open the embryo would be mush. So I’ve come to associate dark black/jet black to glossy black as dead seed. Again this is just the experience I’ve had. How are yours going!

I thought it was the "purple" color leaching into the shell. The flower was pure purple, I do remember that about them. Funny what things I can remember about the seeds I've grown out over 40+ years.
