Well as short as I can make it. In 1943 when Cleveland was awarded a franchise in the NFL they ran a contest in the Plain Dealer(local paper) to come up with a name for the team. Paul Brown was hired as a rookie Head coach before the name had been finalized. The contest name picked was the Panthers. Paul Brown caught wind of the name and realized that there was a perennial loser semi pro team called "the panthers" in Canton and immediately cornered McBride(owner) about it saying no team he coaches is going to be named after some losers. So they ran the contest again. Now heres where it gets interesting. Joe Louis (The Brown Bomber) was the biggest thing in sports at the time, he was a god. Well there were literally thousands of entrys saying to pick The Cleveland Brown Bombers and McBride decided he liked just the Browns used. So the team got named the Cleveland Browns after Joe Louis making them the only professional major sports team named after a black man. Oh and they paid 1000 to both winners of the contests just to be fair. 1000 was a ton of money back then. One more thing, there was a attempt to sort of hide this and pease the racists and the story changed to they were named after Paul Brown. That simple isnt true and I have been told that by the browns personal dept several times. David Modell told me once, who would spend a fortune trying to get a NFL franchise and then name the team after their rookie head coach who had never won a single professional game
Isn't it ironic that, after all of that, they are still a losing team? Serious question, though...Is it really racist to name the team after "The Brown Bomber" when that was the nickname name Joe Louis went by? Is that any different than being called "The Italian Stallion"? My grandfather was a boxer in the 30s and 40s and he went by that nickname long before Rocky came out.
LOL! The company I work for is a small company based out of Cleveland so I have a lot of fun busting on them about the Browns, even though I'm really not a football fan. I did some work down in KY last year and the guy I worked for is an administrator at the VA hospital down there. He was telling me that the Browns actually donate a shitload of Super Bowl tickets to the VA every year to be given to disabled vets. He said that someone from the Browns said that they will keep donating their Super Bowl tickets for as long as they aren't playing in it, because they have no use for themWait a minute, aren't they undefeated this year so far

I’m not sure about stats but these super rich people are dying on the vine. Most racing is hurting I think. I suspect pro sports views are way down. Hollywood isn’t putting out much. Think I saw where Robert Dinero was going to have to get by on 7m this year, way down.
